Innate Defenses Flashcards
What cells act as epithelial chemical barriers?
Paneth Cells
What interferon do lymphocytes secrete?
Gamma
What interferon do most WBCs secrete?
Alpha
What interferon do fibroblasts secrete?
Beta
What do interferons activate and mobilize?
Activate Macrophages
Mobilize NK’s
What is FDA approved alpha IFN used for?
As an antiviral against Hep C virus
To treat genital warts caused by the herpes virus
When are interferons activated?
When the host cell is invaded by a virus
What happens when interferons are activated?
They leave the infected cell and enter neighboring cells to thus stimulate the neighboring cells to activate genes for Protein Kinase R
What is Protein Kinase R (PKR)?
An antiviral protein that nonspecifically blocks viral reproduction in the neighboring cell
