Injury To Bone Flashcards
1
Q
3 Overlapping Stages of Bone Healing
*Is the same for all bone
A
- Inflammation
- Bone Production (proliferation phase)
- Bone Remodelling (maturation phase)
2
Q
Explain the Inflammatory Phase
A
Starts Immediately for days
- Bone fractured–bleeding
- Bleeding–inflammation and clotting of site
- Necrosis occur at end of bone
- inadequate blood supply by torn BV
- Hematoma/Clot forms in medullary canal
- Provides initial structural stability for producing new bone
3
Q
Explain the Proliferation Phase
A
- Hematoma serves as a basis for fibrin network—Granulation Tissue Grows
- capillaries extend into tissue
- Phagocytotic cells remove debris
- Fibroblasts lay down collagen
- Chondroblasts lay down cartilage - Formation of Procallus splints two bone ends together
- Osteoblasts from periosteum and endosteum generate new bone to fill the gap
- Bony callus replaces procallus
* Damaged is repaired by new bone formation, not scar tissue
4
Q
Explain the Remodelling Phase
A
*Several Months Osteoblast/Osteoclast Activity -excessive callus bone removed -more compact bone -blood circulation improves -eventually, normal appearance *Usually takes 6-8 weeks to heal a significant degree
5
Q
Complications affecting bone healing
A
- Muscle Spasms
- Infection
- Ischemia
- Compartment Syndrome
- Fat Emboli
- Nerve Damage
- Failure to heal
6
Q
Factors Promoting Bone Healing
A
- Immobilization
- Physical Therapy once adequately healed
- Cast Fit/Swelling
- Shift of Approximated Ends
- Compression
7
Q
Common Fracutes
A
Potts, Galeazzi, Colles
