  • ‘no pain, no gain’ attitude (thin line between pushing yourself and injury)
  • perception that playing with pain or injury is a desired characteristic/valued
  • perception that athletes’ are seen as ‘less valued’ by coaches if they are unable to contribute to winning

  • help is often available immediately after injury but not during later stages of recovery
