Injuries and effects of aging on the joints Flashcards
What is dislocation?
Articulating surface is forced out of position
What is dislocation?
-Articulating surface is forced out of position
-Damages articular cartialge, ligaments, and joint capsule
What is subluxation?
a partial dislocation
What is rheumatism?
A pain and stiffness of skeletal and muscular systems
What is arthritis?
All forms of rheumatism that damages articular cartilages of synovial joints
What is Osteoarthritis?
-MC
-Due to repetitive motion of opposing joint surfaces
What is Rheumatoid Arthritis?
-Autoimmune disease of joints
- An inflammatory condition due to genetic and environmental factors
-Wrists and hands, heart inflammation
What is gouty arthritis?
-Occurs when crystals (uric acid/calcium salts) form within synovial fluid
-due to metabolic disorder
-Consuming meat, seafood, beer, and being overweight are factors
What is joint immobilization?
-Reduces flow of synovial fluid
-Can cause arthritis symptoms
-Treated by continuous passive motion
Bones and aging
-Bone mass descreases
-Bones weaken
-Increase risk of hip fracture, hip dislocation, or pelvic damage
Bone Recycling
-Living bones maintain homeostatic ion equilibrium
-Bone building (osteoblasts)/Bones breakdown (osteoclasts)
-CALCIUM- bones contains 99% of total body calcium
What 5 factors affect bone strenght?
1.) Age
2.) Physical Stress
3.) Hormone levels
4.) Calcium/Phosphorus uptake and excretion
5.) Genetic and environmental factors
Bone health and overall health
-Bone tumors
-Osteoporosis
-Arthritis
-Rickets (vitamin D deficiency)
