Diarthroses Flashcards
What is diarthroses?
freely moveable, full ROM
What are characteristics of Synovial Joint?
-Only type of diarthrotic joint
-FULL ROM
-Located at ends of articulating bones
-Special features like: articular capsule/synovial fluid
What are the synovial joint’s special structures?
1.) Joint Capsule
2.) Synovial Fluid
3.) Joint Cavity
4.) Articular Cartilage
5.) Accessory structures
What makes up the joint capsule (articular capsule)?
1.) Fibrous capsule outside
2.) Synovial membrane inside (makes synovial fluid)
What makes up the accessory structures of the synovial joint?
1.) Menisci
2.)Fat pads
3.) Bursae
4.) Ligaments
What are properties of the synovial joint?
-Wide ROM
-Contains synovial fluid in a capsule & special structures
-Composed of mixed ingredients (fiber, cartilage, bones)
-Found between fingers, toes, ankles, wrists, knees, elbows etc.
What are the function of Articular Cartilage?
-Covering at the end of two articualting bones
-Resembles hyaline (smooth, brittle, heals poorly) but has more water
-Reduces friction during movement (by synovial fluid)
-Damage to cartilage can result in Osteoarthritis (MC)
PAIN DUE TO FRICTION
What is synovial fluid?
Egg yolk consistency (tough, viscous)
-plasma filtrate with HYALURONIC ACID and secreted by fibroblast in SYNOVIAL MEMBRANE
What are the functions of synovial fluid?
1.) Lubricate
2.) Nutrient Distribution
3.) Shock Absorption
When you have low viscosity, your synovial fluid will be what?
Thin
If you have a high viscosity, your synovial membrane will be what?
Thick
