Injection Moulding Flashcards
What is injection moulding?
Injection moulding is a common technique to make plastic products by using thermoplastics.
What are the components of a injection moulding machine?
Hopper, the ram, the screw, the heater, the mould and the injector.
What happens to the granules of plastics after they are fed into the hopper?
They fall into the screw, which is known as the Archimedean screw.
Why does the screw rotate?
The screw rotates to push the plastic towards the heaters.
What happens when the screw is pushed forward by hydraulic ram?
The screw injects the plastic into the mould and its pressure makes sure that it is filled.
Why does the plastic cool quickly?
The plastic cools quickly because the mould is cold.
What products are the injection moulding process used in?
Buckets, phone cases, TV cases and chairs.
What are the advantages of injection moulding?
There can be very complex, high detailed shapes. There is also mass production of products that are able to be fully automated.
What are the disadvantages of injection moulding?
The moulds for the machine are very detailed and they are made with expensive material, so they would be very expensive to buy. To setup the process the costs are high.
How much is an injection moulding machine?
$12,000
