Extrusion Flashcards
What is extrusion?
Extrusion is a process that makes products that have a continuous cross section.
Where is the plastic placed in the machine?
The plastic is placed into the hopper in the machine.
What form of plastic is put into the machine?
Plastic that is either powered or granular.
Where is the powder fed?
The powder is fed into a screw in the machine known as the archimedian screw.
What component pushes the plastic along the chamber?
The screw thread pushes it.
Where does the plastic soften?
The plastic softens in the heating chamber.
How does the soft plastic take its new shape?
The soft plastic is forced through the die.
How is the plastic cooled?
The plastic is cooled by using water.
What products are produced using this process?
Pipes, rails and coat wire.
What are the advantages of extrusion?
It can continually run as long as there is plastic in the hopper. Dies are cheap to make, so the production process is a low cost.
What are the disadvantages of extrusion?
It can produce only cross sectional type shapes and products.
