Assess client data such as vital signs, laboratory values, and allergies before preparing and administering medications by injection
What is the difference between intradermal, subcutaneous, and intramuscular injections and their applications?
What equipment is appropriate for administering an injection?
Prepare injections from an ampule, vial, and disposable injection unit, and mix two compatible medications into one injection
Identify the correct site with landmarks of intramuscular injections into the deltoid, vastus lateralis, and ventrogluteal muscles.
Safety and accurately administer intradermal, subcutaneous, and intramuscular injections.
Deltoid IM
For Average adult: up to 2mL of medication with a 1-1.5 inch needle
Do not use for infant’s and toddlers <3 y.o
For Preschoolers and older: .5 - 1 inch needle
Vastus Lateralis IM
Average adult: up to 3mL with an 18-25 Gauge with a 5/8 to 1-inch needle for oil based
Use a 22-27 Gauge with a 5/8 to 1-inch needle for aqueous based
For Infants: give up to 1 mL with a 1-inch needle
For Small Infants: give up to 0.5 mL with a 5/8-inch needle
Ventroguteal IM
Average adults: Give up to 3mL with an 18-25 Gauge with an 1.5-inch needle for oil-based
Use a 22-27 Gauge with an 1.5 in needle for aqueous solutions.
Inner forearm or the upper back ID
Use a tuberculin or other small syringe (1mL or smaller) with a .5 to 5/8-inch, 25-27 Gauge needle.
at a 5–15-degree angle. (almost parallel to skin)
Outer aspect of arm, the abdomen, and the anterior thighs SC
Use a 25-31-Gauge, 5/8 needle if inserting at 45-degree angle or 1/2-inch needle if inserting at a 90-degree angle.
If you can pinch 2-inches of skin, insert needle at a 90-degree angle
1-inch of skin, insert needle at 45-degree angle
