What are the primary functions of police when attending a crime scene
Attending the scene at an early stage
Taking control of the situation

What is the initial action investigation model
VAWSEIPO
Victim – identify and locate the victim/s
Appreciation – make an initial appreciation of the incident. Assess personal risk and then preserve the life of others
Witnesses – locate and contain witnesses
Scene– preserve the scene (e.g. set boundaries)
Exhibits – note evidence and preserve any that would be lost or destroyed
Ingredients - consider the ingredients of the alleged offence have been established
Powers – identify powers available and consider executing them
Offenders - identify and apprehend suspect/s
Appreciation – what is an aim
one line statement that demonstrates a single objective
Appreciation – what are courses open
List of all the possible ways the aim could be achieved
Appreciation - what is plan
course of action designed to put the selected course into action to achieve the desired aim. (Must be logical and consistent)
In some circumstances delay may occur between the initial report and police arriving at the scene. During this time evidence may be lost or contaminated. To reduce this risk the complainant may be asked to do what?

Prevent others from entering or touching the scene
Await police arrival and ID themselves to the first police onsite
