Q

What are competitive inhibitors?

A

-have similar shape to substrate molecule and compete with the substrate for the active site
-fit in = enzyme inhibitor complex = prevents substrates entering

Q

What are non-competitive inhibitors?

A

-bind to the enzyme at an allosteric site - alters the shape of the active site
-prevents substrate from binding to it
-disrupts the structure

Q

The reaction rate of competitive inhibitors

A

-increase in inhibitors - increasing the substrate concentration
-can increase the rate of reaction
-more likely to collide with active site

Q

The reaction rate of non-competitive inhibitors

A

-increase substrate concentration- can’t increase rate of reaction
-as shape of active site remains changed
-so complexes are unable to form

Q

What are irreversible inhibitors?

A

-inhibitors can form covalent bonds with enzymes = inhibiting them permanently
-results in complete inactivation of the enzyme
-can be dangerous as biological reaction will be stopped

Q

What are reversible inhibitors?

A

-bind to active site through H bonds + weak ionic interactions = dont bind permanently
-act as regulators in metabolic pathways
