Enzyme Action Flashcards
Specificity of enzymes
-result of the complementary nature between shape of active site and substrate
The enzyme substrate complex
-forms when an enzyme + substrate join
-only temporarily before the enzyme catalyse the reaction + products are released
The lock + key model
-enzymes are globular
-shape is determined by tertiary that makes up enzyme
-highly specific
Enzyme action
- substrate + enzyme have kinetic energy = always moving
-successful collision = enzyme substrate complex
-leaves active site free to catalyse
The induced fit model
-enzyme + substrate interact with each other
-enzyme and its active site can change shape as the substrate enters the enzyme
-called conformational change
-maximises ability of the enzyme to catalyse the reaction
Lower activation energy
-speeds up by reducing stability of bonds in reactants
= more reactive
