Which aminoglycoside is used for serious gram negative (coliform) infection?
Gentamicin. Also used for gram positive staph infection.
Why does gentamicin need to be monitored?
It is given IV and is toxic. Renal and oto-toxicity is common.
What type of infections are tetracyclines used for?
Broad spectrum, Used for genital tract (chlamydia) and RTI’s.
Give 2 examples of macrolides.
Clarithromycin and erythromycin.
When would you prescribe a macrolide?
In someone who is allergic to penicillin to treat gram positive infection.
Which organisms are macrolides effective against?
Mostly gram positive and a few irregular (chlamydia, coxiella and mycoplasma).
What is azithromycin used for?
Chlamydia treatment
Name an oxazolidinone effective against MRSA infection.
Linezolid. Can cause bone suppression so only used in serious infections.
Which cyclic lipopeptide is useful for MRSA and gram positive infection?
Daptomycin. Useful for serious MRSA infections.
