Q
Sulfisoxazole
A
- Bacteriostatic sulfonamide
- MOA: PABA antimetabolites inhibit dihydropteroate synthase
- Use: gram +, gram -, Nocardia, Chlamydia
- Triple sulfas or SMX for simple UTI
- Toxicity:
- Hypersensitivity rxn
- Hemolysis if G6PD deficient
- Nephrotoxicity
- Photosensitivity
- Kernicterus in infants
- Displace other drugs from albumin
- Resistance:
- Altered enzyme (bacterial dihydropteroate synthase)
- Decreased uptake
- Increased PABA synthesis

Q
Trimethoprim
A
- Bacteriostatic inhibitor of nucleic acid synthesis
- MOA: Inhibits bacterial dihydrofolate reductase
- Use: used in combo with sulfonamides (TMP-SMX)
- Sequential block of folate synthesis
- Combo for UTI, Shigella, Salmonella, Pneumocystis jiroveci
- Toxicity: Megaloblastic anemia, leukopenia, granulocytopenia
- May alleviate w/ supplement folinic acid
