  • Bactericidal Fluoroquinolones
  • MOA: Inhibits DNA gyrase (topoisomerase II)
  • Cannot take w/ antacids
  • Use: gram - of urinary or GI tracts
    1. Pseudomonas
    2. Neisseria
    3. Some gram +
  • Toxicity: GI upset, Super infections, skin rashes, headache, dizzy
    1. contraindicated in pregnancy and children b/c tendon damage
    2. Tendonitis/rupture in adults
    3. leg cramps and myalgias in kids
  • Resistance: chromosome encoded mutation in DNA gyrase

  • Bactericidal antiprotozoal
  • MOA: free radical toxic metabolites in bacteria that damages DNA
  • Use: Giardia, Entamoeba, Trichomonas, Gardnerella vaginalis, Anaerobes (Bacteroides, C. diff)
    1. Used w. bismuth & amoxacilin for 3x therapy for H. pylori
  • Toxicity: Disulfram-like reaction w/ alcohol
