Inheritance, variation and evolution Flashcards
What type of cell does meiosis form?
A non-identical cell
What type of cell does mitosis form?
An identical cell
What are the gametes in plants?
Pollen and egg cells
What reproductive process is involved in the formation of gametes?
Meiosis
What happens in the meiosis process?
Copies are made of the genetic information and then the cell then divides twice to form four gametes, each with a single set of chromosomes; all gametes are genetically different from eachother
What is DNA made up of?
It is a polymer made up of two strands forming a double helix
Where is DNA contained?
Chromosomes
What is a gene?
A small section of DNA on a chomosome
What is the genome?
The entire genetic material of an organism
What is an allele?
Alleles are different versions of the same gene
What is a dominant allele?
The allele that is always expressed
What is a recessive allele?
A type of allele that when present on its own will not affect the individual
What does homozygous mean?
Two identical alleles of one gene
What does heterozygous mean?
Two different alleles of one gene
What is the genotype?
The collection of genes an organism has
