Inheritance key words Flashcards
1
Q
Define Co-dominance
A
- When 2 alleles do not have complete dominance over each other
- Both expressed in phenotype
(3 phenotypes, 2 alleles)
2
Q
Define Multiple alleles
A
- More than 2 alleles for a gene
(eg. Blood groups ABO)
3
Q
Define Autosomal linkage
A
- 2 different genes on the same autosome
- Not X or Y chromosome
- Linked because aren’t separated in meiosis independent segregation
4
Q
Define Epistasis
A
- 1 gene masks and modifies the expression of another
- alters expected ratio
5
Q
Define Monohybrid
A
- Crossing one gene
- 3:1 ratio
6
Q
Define phenotype
A
- expression of genetic constitution
- and its interaction with the environment
7
Q
Define genotype
A
- genetic constitution of an organism
8
Q
Define Homozygous
A
- 2 copies of the same allele for a gene
9
Q
Define linkage
A
When more than 2 genes are located on the same chromosome, they are linked.
10
Q
Define heterozygous
A
- 2 different alleles for a gene
11
Q
Define sex linkage
A
- Genes loci located on X or Y chromosome
- in non-homologous region
- Mostly X chromosome as Y is too small
12
Q
Define dominant allele
A
A version of a gene that is always expressed in phenotype
13
Q
Define recessive allele
A
Version of a gene that’s not expressed if there is dominant alleles present
