INHERITANCE Flashcards
what does meiosis form?
gametes (sex cells)
what are the stages of meiosis?
PMAT
1️⃣ the chromatids replicate to form 92 (46 pairs)
2️⃣ PMAT - P means prophase which means first
this is prophase 1
the chromosomes match up with their homologous pairs (similar pairs). they then do CROSSING OVER when they transfer DNA to make recombinant chromosomes.
3️⃣ M means metaphase 1- in this case, M stands for middle. the chromosome pairs line up in the middle
4️⃣ A means anaphase 1 - in this case, the A stands for away. the chromosomes are pulled away to the sides
5️⃣ T stands for telophase 1 - in this case, T stands for two. the cell splits to form 2 new cells.
The cells have 46 chromatids each, so they have to divide again to make 23.
6️⃣ prophase 2, they don’t have any homologous pairs, neither do they have to transfer DNA but the spindles that drag them apart, start to form
7️⃣ metaphase 2 - they go to the middle but without pairs.
8️⃣ anaphase 2 - the chromatids are pulled to each side of the cell
9️⃣ telophase 2 - the nucleus divides and then so does the cell creating two new cells
