Inheritance Flashcards
What chromosomes do females have?
XX
What chromosomes do males have?
XY
What are genes controlling the same characteristic called?
Alleles
What is the dominant allele?
The one which masks the effect of the recessive
What is the recessive allele?
The effect which is masked
What do genetic diagrams illustrate?
How alleles and characteristics are inherited
Phenotype
The physical appearance of the characteristic
Genotype
The genetic make up of s characteristic (the alleles)
Homozygous
Where both alleles are the same either dominant or recessive
Heterozygous
Where the 2 alleles are different
What allele can cause genetic disorders?
Both
If the dominant allele causes a genetic disorder how many dominant alleles need to be inherited to pass on the disease? (Same q for recessive)
1 for dominant
2 for recessive
What is cystic fibrosis caused by?
A recessive allele
What does cystic fibrosis do?
It effects the cell membrane and causes the production of sticky mucus
How many pairs of chromosomes do humans have?
23
