Inheritance Flashcards
Genotype
All the organism’s genes
Phenotype
The characteristics seen as a result of genotype and environment
Gene
section of DNA that codes for a protein
Allele
A version of a gene
Locus
Position of a gene on a chromosome
Homozygous
2 of the same allele
Heterozygous
Alleles are different to each other
Dominant
if allele is present it will be expressed
Recessive
Only exposed if no dominant allele present
Codominance
Both alleles are dominant, therefore both expressed in the phenotype
e.g Black and white, will produce a roan cow
Sex linkage
A genes whose locus is on the X chromosome
Autosomal linkage
Genes that are located on the same chromosome
Epistatus
When one gene modifies or mask the expression of a different gene at a different locus
Monohybrid
Genetic inheritance cross of a characteristic determined by one gene
Dihybrid
Genetic inheritance cross of a characteristic determined by two genes
