inguinal canal Flashcards
What is the inguinal region?
junction of the anterior ab wall and thigh
inguinal hernias are common here especially in males
Why is the groin area weak?
because of the descent of the testes taking all layer of the abdominal wall that surround the gonads
what is the processes vaginalis?
peritoneal out pouching that occurs.
the area between the extra peritoneal fascia and the transversalis fascia
what layer is not included in the descent of the gonads?
transversus abdominis - processus vaginalis passes under these fibers
What are the coverings of the gonads?
transversalis fascia
internal oblique
external oblique aperneurosis
what is the processes vaginalis transformed into?
inguinal canal
all vasculature and nerves are surround by the same layers as the abdomen
What is the only structure that passes through the inguinal canal for women?
round ligament - remnant of the gubernaculum
Where is the inguinal ligament?
above and parallel to the lower part of inguinal ligament
Where does the inguinal canal begin?
at the deep inguinal ring 4cm long ends at the superficial inguinal ring
What and where is the inguinal ligament?
extends from the ASIS to the pubic symphysis inferior portion of the external oblique aponuerosis
What are the contents of the inguinnal canal in men?
genital branch of the genitofemoral nerve
spermatic cord
What is the contents of the inguinal canal in women?
round ligament
What passes partly through the inguinal canal exiting the superficial ring?
ilioinguanal nerve
Where is the deep inguinal ring?
next to the inferior epigastric
half way between the ASIS and the pubic symphysis
it is an opening in the transversals fascia
Where is the superficial inguinal ring?
above pubic crest/ the medial and lateral crus are attached to the pubic symphysis and the pubic tubercle
it is an opening of the external oblique aponeurosis
