Infra-red Spectroscopy Flashcards
Higher strength of bond…
…increases frequency of vibrations
Heavier weight of bond…
…decreases frequency of vibrations
What ranges are of O-H bonds (right to left) ?
O-H Alcohol: 3250 to 3550 [broad]
O-H Carboxylic Acid: 2500 to 3000 [broad]
What ranges are of C=O bonds (right to left) ?
C=O Aldehyde: 1720 to 1740 [sharp]
C=O Ketone: 1700 to 1725 [sharp]
C=O Carboxylic Acid: 1700 to 1725 [sharp]
NOTE: If there’s no O-H group, its a Ketone
What range are N-H bonds?
N-H Anime: 3300 to 3500 [sharp]
What is the fingerprint region?
A range between 500cm-1 to 1500cm-1 that is so complex, it is used to identify highly specific molecules
What do greenhouse gases do?
Absorb Infra-red radiation in the atmosphere due to corresponding vibrational energies
