Information Systems - General Flashcards
What are some social and ethical issues?
- Privacy of the individual
- Security of data and information
- Accuracy of data and information
- Data quality
- Changing nature of work
- Appropriate information use
- Health and safety
- Copyright laws
What does volatile mean?
Retaining data only as long as there is a power supply connected
What is a diagrammatic representation of an information system?
A diagram that shows the data, information processes, users and participants, and information technology within an information system
What is a system?
A set of things working together as parts of a mechanism
What is an information process of an information system?
What needs to be done to collect and transform data into useful information. These activities coordinate and direct the system’s resources to achieve the system’s purpose. (e.g. Collecting, Organising, Analysing, Storing & Retrieving, Transmitting & Receiving, Processing and Displaying)
What is analysing as an information process?
The information process by which data is interpreted, transforming it into information.
What is collecting as an information process?
The information process by which data is entered or captured by a computer system.
What is displaying as an information process?
The information process by which information is output from the system to meet a purpose. It controls the format of the information presented to the participant of user.
What is information?
Information is the output displayed by an information system. Knowledge is acquired when information is received.
What is organising as an information process?
The information process by which data is structured into a form appropriate for the use of other information processes.
What is processing as an information process?
The information process by which data can be manipulated in different ways to produce a new value or result.
What is storing and retrieving as an information process?
The information process by which data and information is saved and accessed later.
What is the boundary of an information system?
The delineation between a system an its environment. The boundary defines what is part of the system an what is part of the environment.
What is the data/information of an information system?
Data: The raw material used by information processes
Information: The output displayed by an information system.
What is the environment of an information system?
The circumstances and conditions that surround an information system.
