INFORMATION SYSTEMS Flashcards
Information system
Is a device or group or devices which allows collection processing and transmission of information
Types of energy
Gravitational potential Electromagnetic EMR elastic potential Electrical energy Heat energy Chemical energy Kinetic energy Nuclear energy Light energy
Energy (definition)
Energy is the ability of a system to do work
Generally energy needs to be transformed from one type to another to make it useful
Frequency
Is the number of waves passing by an area in a certain period of time
Wavelength
The distance between a point on wave and the same point on the next wave
Amplitude
Is the maximum movement of particles from their resting position
Period
The time it takes for one complete wave to occur
Satellite
Is an object that orbits a larger object in space
Satellite orbits
Low earth orbit
Polar orbit
Geostationary orbit
Geostationary satellite
Orbits the earth once every 24 hours and remains in a fixed position above the earth
Orbits above the equator
Binary code
Code made up of pulses of electricity
There are two signals 1 and 0
Refraction
Involves a change in direction of a wave this happens when they move from one medium to another
Total Internal Reflection
If the light hits a boundary at a big enough angle all of the light stays within the glass and is all reflected internally
Optic fibres
Is a thin glass hair which allows light to strike the inside walls at less than the critical angle allowing TIR
Multiplexing
Is a way to increase the number of messages that can be transmitted down a wire or fibre
