Information Processing Flashcards
1
Q
Information processing
A
- child/brain as computer (processory of information)
- focus on mechanisms
- task analysis = breaking into smaller components to understand children’s failure/points of development
- components: cognitive processes, actions
2
Q
basic processes
A
- attending
- encoding
- recognizing
- retrieving
3
Q
working memory
A
- a temporary memory storage that contains items you are actively attending to
- maintains information relevant to a task (from multiple sources), until work is done
- limited capacity
4
Q
long term memory
A
accessed by retrieval
5
Q
executive functioning (central executive)
A
- selects what we need from long term memory
- strategy selection & flexibility
- inhibition of behavior
6
Q
Task analysis: Piaget’s object permenance task
A
- breaking task into smaller steps
- includes the cognitive processes required to understand children’ts failure/points of development
7
Q
mechanisms of development
A
- improvement in basic processes, from: increased processing speed from myelination and increased connectivity among the brain regions; experience -> the more times you see something = increased speed
- strategies such as rehearsal, selective attention (instruction, discovery)
- content knowledge (experience) -> the more you know about a topic the better you are at memorizing info in that topic
8
Q
rehearsal
A
repeating whatever we are trying to remeber
not born with this strategy
9
Q
selective attention
A
attend to the things that are relevant to remeber
