Influenza Flashcards
Type of virus?
RNA virus - mutates quicker than DNA virus
8 segment genome - orthomyxoviridae family
3 groups?
IfA - mammals, birds
IfB + IfC - affects humans
surface proteins - classifications
H - haemagglutinin: viral attachment (18 types)
N - neuraminidase: new virion release (11 types)
antigenic drift?
continous point mutations of Ag properties. mutations decrease Ab recognition + binding
antigenic shift?
abrupt - re-assortment in gene segments. new combination of 2 or more strains: new H/N combo. able to jump species.. 25% pop affected –> pandemic
