Influence Of Early Relationships On Later Relationships Flashcards
Moron-Wilson and Smith (1998)
- used questionnaires to assess attachment type and bullying in 196 children (7-11 years old)
- found securely attached children were least likely to be bullied. And avoidant were most likely.
Quinton (1984)
-Compared 50 women who were raised in institutions and had poor attachments, with a control group of 50 women who were raised at home.
Found- significantly worse parenting from the institutional group than the control group, although 31% of those bad parents went on to be good ones.
Suggests- childhood attachment affects future ones.
Hazan and shaver (1987)
-200 males 200 females
- did a love quiz assessing current relationships and childhood attachments
Found- positive correlation between attachment and current relationships. Securely attached children were more likely to show secure patterns as adults and had longer relationship.
Zimmerman et al (2000)- contradicts Hazan and Shaver
-assessed attachement type in 44 children using the strange situation.
- followed up 16 years later and interviewed about their quality of their relationship and about any significant life events that had occurred e.g. Divorce.
Found- quality of relationships were more related to life events.
