Influence of early attachment Flashcards
what are some limitations
- retrospective data
- overly determinist
what research into early attachment used retrospective data
Hazan & Shaver
why is retrospective data a limitation of Hazan & Shaver research
- adults were asked questions about their early lives in order to assess infant attachment
- their recollection will most likely have been flawed as memories of the past are not always accurate
- therefore results may not be accurate and lack validity as they are based on retrospective data
why is research into early attachment overly deterministic
- research like Hazan & Shaver suggest that very early childhood experiences have a fixed effect on adult relationships so children who ere insecurely attached are doomed to have negative relationship experiences as adults
- this is not the case as many studies have found that participants had experienced happy adult relationships despite not being securely attached as infants
what are some strengths
- research support: Hazan & Shaver
- research support: Bailey
what did Hazan & Shaver find
they conducted a love quiz and found that people who were securely attached as infant went o to form happy and long-lasting romantic relationships as adults, however those who were insecurely attached as infants, tended to have negative and short-lasting romantic experiences as adults
what do Hazan & Shaver findings show
shows that early attachment type has an impact on adult relationships
what research supports the influence of early attachment on parenting
Bailey
what did Bailey find
Bailey studied around 100 mothers and their infants and found that most mothers which had experienced an insecure attachment with their own mother went on to have an insecurely attached infant and those which had experienced secure attachment went on to have a securely attached infant
what did Bailey findings show
shows that early attachment type has an impact on parenting
