Inflight Icing and Icing Procedures Flashcards
What temperature should inflight icing be considered under?
From + 10 C to -40 C
What should aircrew try and do as much as possible?
Avoid the risk of icing.
What temperature does airframe/structural icing occur?
0 C to -20 C
What temperature can supercooled ice occur at?
-40 C
What type of liquid occurs above 0 C?
Water droplets only
What temps does Clear Ice form at?
0 to -10 C
What temps does mixed clear and rime ice occur?
-10 C to - 15 C
What temps does rime ice occur?
-15 C to -20 C
What is the most dangerous type of icing?
Clear Ice
What is a good indication that freezing rain may exist at higher altitudes?
Presence of ice pellets, which usually indicates below freezing cold air with a layer of warmer air above.
What is rime ice?
- Rime ice is white, and has an opaque appearance with a frost-like surface.
- It has little weight and breaks away easily
What is mixed ice?
Mixture of rime and clear ice.
What is hoar frost?
Occurs on parked aircraft left outside on clear nights when:
- The temp falls below 0 C
- There is very little wind
- There is high humidity
What is trace ice?
Ice becomes just perceptible but accumulation is very low.
What should be done if the freezing rain is encountered?
Action to get out of the freezing rain.
