how is inflation calculated
calculated using consumer price index (CPI)
what does the CPI do
follows changes in prices of a basket of goods and services. (600 commonly used items, adjusted every so often)
what are 3 things causing inflation
- more demand & not enough supply
- more credit=more spending
- tax increase
what are the 3 most important CPI components
- housing
- transport
- food and beverages
what are 3 things consumers can do to minimize the effects of inflation
- focus only on necessities (stop over-buying)
- buy things that are cheaper (off-brand)
- grow own vegetables
