Inflammatory Dermatoses Flashcards
What is Atopic Eczematous Dermatitis?
Pruritic, erythematous, oozing rash with vesicles and edema frequently involving face and flexor surfaces, Type I hypersensitivity associated with asthma and allergic rhinitis
What is Contact Dermatitis? Tx?
Pruritic, erythematous oozing rash with vesicles and edema which arises upon exposure to allergens such as poison ivy and nickel jewlery (type IV hypersensitivity), irritant chemicals and drugs; Removal of offending substance or glucocorts
What is Acne Vulgaris? Describe mechanism of dermatitis
Comedones (white/blackheads), pustules (pimples), nodules; Extremely common especially in adolescents; Chronic inflamm of hair follicle and sebaceous gland by either hormones increasing sebum production with concurrent increased keratin production which block follicles and form comedones or by infection with Propionibacterium acnes which break down sebum and release proinflamm fatty acids; Benzoyl peroxide (antimicrobial) and vitamin A derivatives (reduce keratin)
What is Psoriasis? Cause? Histological findings? Tx?
Well-circumscribed, salmon-colored plaques w/ silvery scale on extensor surfaces and scalp with possible nail pitting caused by excessive keratinocyte proliferation; Possible autoimmune etiology (associated with HLA-C and trauma); Acathosis (epidermal hyperplasia), Perakeratosis (hyperkeratosis with retention of keratinocyte nuclei in stratum corneum), Munro uabscesses (neutrophils in stratum corneum), Auspitz sign; Corticosteroids, UV light to damage keratinocytes, or immune mod Tx
What is Auspitz sign?
Bleeding when psoriatic scale is removed due to the thinning of the epidermis above elongated dermal papillae
What is Lichen Planus? Histo findings? Etiology? Associated disease?
Pruritic, planar, polygonal, purple papules with reticular white lines on the surface (Wickham striae) involving wrists, elbows and oral mucosa; Inflamm of dermal-epidermal junction with “saw-tooth” appearance; unknown etiology; associated with HCV
