What is IBD?

no known cause theories: -infectious agents -autoimmune response -environmental influences/allergies -genetics

Chron’s disease?
Crohn’s isn’t limited to the GI tract. It may also affect the skin, eyes, joints, and liver. Since symptoms usually get worse after a meal, patients with Crohn’s will often experience weight loss due to food avoidance.
Ulcerative colitis disease?
confined to the colon (large bowel) and only affects the top layers
Pathophysiology of crohns?
abnormal inflammatory response to gut bacteria
Pathophysiology of ulcerative colitis?
influx of T cells which are cytotoxic to colonic epithelium

- family Hx
- isotretinoin use
S&S uc?
Common
-diarrhea:
liquid with tenesmus
bloody with mucus & pus
-abdominal pain:
cramp
coincides with urge to defecate
other: fatigue wt loss ↑ T° ↓ appetite anorexia dehydration

age, ethnicity, family Hx, smoking, use of NSAID, living in urban areas,
location of UC?
colon which becomes thin
location of crohns?
anywhere along digestive tract; colon is thick
