What are the classifications of IBD?
Ulcerative colitis - colon
Crohn’s disease - anywhere in GI tract
What are environmental factors for IBD?
- Diet, smoking, and stress alter microbial flora
- High intake of refined sugars
- Low intake of raw fruit, vegetables, omega-3s, dietary fiber.
What drugs are associated with IBD?
- NSAIDs
- Antibiotics
- Oral contraceptives
What should we know about a barium enema or swallow?
Adequate nutrition is a must
What are systemic complications of IBD?
- MS
- Malabsorption, liver disease, Osteoporosis
- Need routine liver function tests
- Bone density scan baseline and every 2 years
What medications contain 5-ASA?
Sulfasalazine (Azulfidine)
Olsalazine (Dipentum)
Mesalamine (Pentasal)
Most effective for UC but used to treat both, administered oral and rectal
When should patients not take methotrexate?
When pregnant
What is Infliximab (Remicade)?
An Anti-TNF - antitumor necrosis factor agent which induces and maintain remission
Anything that ends with mab is a biological modifier
