INFLAMMATION AND WOUND HEALING Flashcards
Inflammation is
the response of vascularized connective tissue to injury, characterized by extracellular fluid and leukocyte accumulation
The main components of inflammation are – and –
a vascular reaction and a cellular response
The steps of the inflammatory response can be remembered as the five Rs:
(1) recognition of the injurious agent,
(2) recruitment of leukocytes,
(3) removal of the agent,
(4) regulation (control) of the response, and
(5) resolution (repair).
Types of inflammation
Acute, chronic and granulomatous
In leukocyte recruitment loose attachment to and rolling on endothelium is mediated by
selectins
In leukocyte recruitment firm attachment to endothelium is mediated by
integrins
Transmigration of leukocytes is mediated by
CD31 (PECAM -1)
The 4 most important mediators of acute inflammation are
vasoactive amines, lipid products (prostaglandins and leukotrienes), cytokines (including chemokines), and products of complement activation.
T/F: Cell-derived mediators are normally sequestered in intracellular granules and can be rapidly secreted by granule exocytosis (e.g., histamine in mast cell granules) or are synthesized de novo (e.g., prostaglandins and leukotrienes, cytokines) in response to a stimulus.
