Inflammation Flashcards
What is inflammation?
Complex reaction in viable vascularised tissue - protective mechanism to clear and deal with consequences of damaging molecule / event; many cells and mediators involved
What is chronic inflammation?
Persistent response (weeks to years) - coexistence of ongoing damage and attempts to heal/rectify
What are the 4 signs of inflammation?
Rubor
Calor (heat)
Tumor (swelling)
Dolor (pain)
What are transudate substances?
Substances that normally exit vessels:
Ultrafiltrate
Low protein and cell content
What are exudate substances?
Substances that leave circ during increased vascular permeability:
High protein and cell content
Cell debris
May be purulent (leukocyte rich)
What is the purpose of exudate?
Dilutes and walls of pathogens to allow spread of solube inflammatory mediators
What is Granulomatous inflammation?
Distinctive pattern of chronic inflammation showing granuloma formation - aggregate of activated macrophages that attempt to eliminate a resistant offending agent after T-cell trigger
