Inflammation (1) Flashcards
What is inflammation?
Inflammation is a complex reaction that occurs in vascularised tissues in response to harmful stimulus by bringing cells and molecules from circulation to site of injury.
What are the stimulus for inflammation?
- Tissue injury such as trauma, cuts
- Infectious agent (bacteria, virus)
- Exposure to toxins (bee stings)
- Foreign bodies (splinters)
- Immune reactions (autoimmune disease)
Inflammation is a fine balance in which it can be beneficial but also can be harmful. Describe.
little IF restores homeostasis, fights disease and enables wound healing. However, too much IF can result in pathological conditions such as RA, cancer etc..
What are the 5 signs of IF?
P: pain, due to chemicals released at nerve endings
R: redness due to increased blood flow
I: immobility due to fluid accumulation
S: swelling due to fluid accumulation
H: heat due to increased blood flow
What are the 2 types of inflammation?
Acute and chronic
Describe the 2 types of IF.
Acute: rapid onset, short duration, initial response of body to stimuli
Chronic: prolonged IF, slow onset, longer lasting
What is the predominant cell type in acute IF?
neutrophils
What is the main aim of acute IF?
to remove causative agent and minimize tissue damage. it is a protective response that initiates immune response to promote tissue repair
What are the 2 stages of acute IF?
vascular & cellular
