infectious processess Flashcards
what is the patho of HSV
- virus persists in latent form in trigeminal (dorsal) nerve and other ganglia
- virus contact with skin and mucous membranes
what is the etiology of HSV?
HSV1 - above the waist
HSV2 - genitals
risk factors of HSV?
stress, common in recurrent lesions
clinical manifestations of HSV?
- tingling/burning.
- followed by pustules, ulcers, vesicles and erythema.
- pain is common.
how long will it take for HSV-1 to heal?
10-14 days
how is HSV diagnosed?
blood testing, swab sample, tzank smear
treatment for HSV?
no cure. only can be managed with analegsics for inflammation & antivirals to decrease duration of outbreak
what is the patho for herpes zoster (shingles)
- an acute localized inflammatory disease of dermatomal segment of skin
- vesicles develop with redness along the dorsal root ganglia
etiology if zoster?
caused by the same herpesvirus that causes varicella
where is zoster present?
sensory dorsal root ganglia
what happens during the zoster virus attack?
-shingles reactivated, virus travels from ganglia to the skin of corresponding dermatome
- results from reactivation of latent virus
zoster diagnosis?
rash
clinical manifestations of zoster?
- vesicles with erythematous bases, lesions, paraesthesia (numbness and tingling)
- pain
- typically unilateral
complication with zoster?
- postherpetic neuralgia characterized by recurring pain after rash.
- can presist for months to years, most common in > 60 years old
