What is the cause of infectious mononucleosis?
A
The Epstein Barr Virus

What is the EBV also known as?
A
Human Herpesvirus 4 (HHV-4)

What population is it more common in?
A
Adolescents and young adults

What are some features of Infectious Mononucleosis?
A
- Sore throat
- Lymphadenopathy
- Pyrexia
- Malaise, anorexia, headache
- Palatal petechiae
- Splenomegaly - occurs in around 50% of patients and may rarely predispose to splenic rupture
- Hepatitis
- Presence of 50% lymphocytes with at least 10% atypical lymphocytes
- Haemolytic anaemia secondary to cold agglutins (IgM)
- A maculopapular, pruritic rash develops in around 99% of patients who take ampicillin/amoxicillin whilst they have infectious mononucleosis

How do you diagnose EBV?
A
The monospot test (Heterophil antibody test)

What is the management of EBV?
A
- Rest during the early stages
- Avoid alcohol
- Drink plenty of fluid
- Simple analgesia.

When can someone return to playing contact sport after having glandular fever?

8 week after having the disease
