What is HIV seroconversion?
Seroconversion is the short period after they become infected.
It is the period when someone is at their most infectious.
What % of people are symptomatic during the seroconversion stage?
60-80%
When does seroconversion usually occur?
3-12 weeks after infection
What are some features of seroconversion?
- Sore throat
- Lymphadenopathy
- Malaise, myalgia, arthralgia
- Diarrhoea
- Maculopapular rash
- Mouth ulcers
- Rarely meningoencephalitis
REMEMBER: Glandular fever type illness
How is a diagnosis made during this stage?
HIV PCR and p24 antigen tests can confirm diagnosis.
NOTE: Antibodies may not be present at this stage.
What would they usually put in a question to make you think HIV seroconversion?
Man returns from a trip abroad and develops a flu-like illness with a maculopapular rash.
