Infectious Disease Small Group Flashcards
neisseria meningitidis
causes streptococci meningitits
- gram negativr diplococci
- extremely potent endotoxin causes severe inflammatory rxn
- rapid bacteremia and sepsis
caused DIC
waterhouse-friderichsen snydrome
overwhelming bacterial infection that leads to bilteral adrenal hemorrhage and necrosis. adrenocortical insufficiency results in a lack of adrenaline and noradrenaline
rapid progression to hypotension and shock
DIC leads to purpura
high albumin in CSF is indicative of what
leaky BBB, inflammation
how does the WBC profile change your differential?
lymphocytes- viral
neutrophil- bacterial
what happens to glucose in CSF in bacterial infections
glucose goes to 0 b/c bacteria consume it
pathology of herpes encephalitis
extensive lymphocyte infiltrates in brain, lung
looking for herpes inclusion bodies- multinucleated cells w/ clear nuclei
CMV histology
owls eye nuclei- causes large, single nucleated cells
aspergillis
invasive hyphae fungi- grows into blood vessels in immunocompromised individuals
once in blood, can disseminate throughout body
