CPC 3 Flashcards
what does fluffy infiltrates bilaterally in the lung suggest?
mononuclear inflammation in the interstitium
what does acute supprative pneumonia look like on xray?
dense opacity/consolidation restricted to one lobe
dense consolidation right around the hilum on xray indicates what?
granulomatous inflammation
what does liquifactive necrosis w/ a lung abcess look like on xray?
dense opacity/consolidation, not the entire lobe, but w/ a liquid/air line
histoplasma capsulatum
causes intracellular budding yeast w/in macrophages
causes granulomas that resemble TB, but w/ more fibrosis
pneumocystis jirovecii
opportunistic pathogen seen in people with suppressed immune system- sampled by “induced sputum” or bronchoalveolar lavage
typically little inflammation
ecthyma gangrenosum
usually infection w/ pseudomonas auerginosa
necrosis/inflammation associated w/ bacteremia
neutropenia increases risk of disease- treatable w/ antibiotics
pseudomonas folliculitis
normal inflammatory response to pseudomonas in hair follicles
candida albicans
budding yeast- can cause esophagitis- (oropharynx called thrush)
creates pseudomembrane
associated w/ acute suppurative inflammation
diagnosis of CMV
inclusion bodies
serologic- IgGs
measuring viral load - qPCR
toxoplasma encephalitis
necrosis and destruction of brain tissue- found at gray/white tissue
multiple lesions
caused by toxoplasma gondii- caused by reactivation rather than primary
necrosis of neurons and microglial cells
variable acute inflammatory rxn
