Infections of the respiratory tract Flashcards
B.pertussis organism produces several toxins, what do they do?
-Increase respiratory secretions and mucus production
The B.pertussis bacteria have specific adhesions, what do they do?
-Allow it to attach to the ciliated respiratory mucosa
How is pertussis diagnosed? (whooping cough)
-PCR- used to copy segments of DNA
What are the symptoms of pertussis in adults? (whooping cough)
- Starts as a cold then paroxysmal cough for 12 weeks
Known as the 100-day cough
What is the tracheal cytotoxin?
-A cell wall component that kills tracheal epithelial cells
What does the tracheal cytotoxin do?
- Partially immobilises the mucociliary escalator
- Causes accumulation of mucus in the airway
How to treat pertussis?(Whooping Cough)
- Oxygen
- Suction of excess mucus
- Antibiotics
How can pertussis/ whooping cough be prevented?
-Vaccination (TDap)
How is B.pertussis transmitted?
- Respiratory droplets
- Highly contagious
What type of bacteria is B.pertussis?
- Gram-negative (pink)
- Coccobacillus (Ball+ Rod)
