What is the classification of strep pneumoniae?
Gram positive diplococci (although can be found singly or in short chains)
What infections does strep pneumoniae cause?
Pneumonia
Meningitis (main cause in children and elderly)
Sepsis (mainly in HIV +ve)
Otitis media
Where on the body is strep pneumoniae normally found?
Commensal of the nasopharynx - found in sinuses, nasal cavity and resp tract
What is the mode of transmission of strep pneumoniae?
Sneezing, coughing and direct contact
What are the virulence factors of strep pneumoniae?
The bacterium have a polysaccharide capsule for protection against phagocytosis
What is the treatment for strep pneumoniae infection?
Amoxicillin or erythromycin
there is also a pneumococcal infection
