Infection & Response Flashcards
How is the nettle adapted for defence and protection?
hairs can sting
so this prevents animals eating them
so less of the plant is damaged
How can you tell if an antiseptic is effective on an agar plate?
if it has the largest area with no bacteria growing
The student concluded that tea tree oil could be used to treat bacterial infections
instead of antibiotics.
Give one reason why this is not a valid conclusion
Antibiotics were not tested
What are the effects of a lack of magnesium and nitrate ions?
magnesium - yellow leaves
nitrate - stunted growth
Why might measuring the plant may be a better method than counting?
As it includes the whole plant
or leaves may vary in size
Describe how you would test for the presence of glucose in fruit
Use Benedict’s solution
glucose turns solution blue to orange
TMV can cause plants to produce less chlorophyll.
Explain why plants with TMV have stunted growth
there is less photosynthesis because of a lack of chlorophyll
so less glucose is made
therefore there are fewer amino acids available for growth
as glucose is needed for making amino acids
In the original woodland trees and plants died and grew for hundreds of years.
When cleared the land grew crops for only three years.
Explain this difference in as much detail as you can.
The minerals and nutrients were recycled in the wood
however the crops removed the nutrients and minerals
What could farmers do to make crops grow on the cleared land for more than three years?
crop rotation
add fertiliser/nutrients
Use the information above to suggest what should be done, by farmers and government,
to prevent ‘blue baby syndrome’.
governments should implement legislation that requires farmers to use less nitrate
as with less or no nitrate, the crops still grow
and instead move to genetically modified crops
