How do you prevent infection in a clinical setting

A

So id follow the various guidelines set out in the infection control standards by the royal college of podiatry:
* So implemetning a good hand hygiene routoine that follows the 5 moments of hand hygiene so
* before patient contact
* before an aeseptic task
* after body fluid exposure
* after patient contact
* after conatact with the patients surroundings

PPE

A

So making sure were utilising the correct PPE
* So are we wearing our apron, masks, gloves goggles etc
* And are we applying them in the correct order in order to minimise the spread of bacteria. So RCOP state that:
1. Apron
2. mask
3. goggles
4. gloves should be put on in that order and then removed

Performing aseptic techniques 5

A
  • So making sure any actions we take are under controlled clinical conditions so for example making sure the space were conducting a procedure is as clean as possible
  • using sterile equipment and perfroming non touch technigues to make sure sterile areas dont become contaminated
  • using forceps to handle equipment
  • applying dressings with minimal handaling to prevent contamination
  • utilising an aseptic feild to open equipment

Correct waste disposal

A

Are we disposing of waste in the correct manner
So are we using orange bags to dispose of potentially infectious waste so for instance infectious dressing nails or skin debris
Black bags for generic municipal waste
Tiger striped bags for non infectious waste
The correct Bins to dispose of sharps, single use instruments chemicals

Sterile equipment 4

A

Making sure all the equipment we using is clean and sterile where applicable so for instnace:
* reusable instrument packs are vacum sealed and have a labelo on displaying date of sterilaistion and expiry date to ensure there safe for use
* Equipment should be sterilised using an autoclave in line with the rcop guidlines so a temperature of around 134 degrees for 3 minutes
* Is a stock rotation system in place so First in first out system
* Do we have instrument traceability systems in place that documents the cleaning process as well as when it was used and what patient is was used on

A

Using antiseptic solutions when performing clinical tasks so for instance clinel wipes or chlorexodine and iodine when performing invase procedures
