Infection Control Flashcards
what is bacteria
single-celled organisms that thrive in diverse environments.
pathogens are harmful organisms (could be bacteria, viruses, fungi etc)
- Infection
- Infection control
- Infectious disease
- Invasion of body tissues by pathogens
- methods that reduce or eliminate infectious organisms
- The cause of pathogens that enter the body
what is a pathogen (4 types)
Harmful organisms including
bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites
3 types of bacterial infections
local infection
staph infection (TSS, food poisoning..)
contagious disease
signs of a local infection
heat redness puss pain inflamation/swelling
what is a virus
a pathogen that only lives in a living cell, it takes a cell as a host to replicate itself ,killing cells in the process. Since they technically aren’t living organisms, they are resistant to antibiotics and can only be prevented by vaccinations.
Hepatitis
Hep is inflammation of the liver caused by blood borne viruses called Hepatitis A, B, C and E.
Fungi
single celled organisms that grow in irregular masses, commonly infect nails
- mold
- mildew
- yeasts
How pathogens enter the body
-mouth
-ears
-broken skin
-eyes
nose
-unprotected sex
ways the body controls infection
- white blood cells
- body secretions (discharge, puss,)
- intact skin as a barrier
- antitoxins (antibodies)
Parasites
grow, feed and live off of living hosts
ex. scabies burrow under skin and nails
Types of disinfectants
Quats- non-toxic, fast-acting, odourless
Phenolics- powerful tuberlocidal disinfectants
Bleach- Sodium hypochlorite
sterilization definition
process that completely destroys all microbial life, including spores
