Infection Control Flashcards
Antiseptic
pertaining to or affecting antisepsis.
2.
free from or cleaned of germs and other microorganisms.
Blood borne pathogens
pathogenic microorganisms that are present in human blood and can cause disease in humans.
Disinfection
Removal of harmful bacteria and germs
3 levels
High medium low level disenfectant
Cold sterile
10-16 hours submerged uninterrupted
Glutaraldehyde
Toxic material
Cause eye rash. Cause asthma attack
Asepsis
The absence of bacteria and other micro organisms
Aseptic technique
method designed to prevent contamination from microorganisms
Cross infection
the transfer of infection, especially to a hospital patient with a different infection or between different species of animal or plant.
Autogenous
arising from within or from a thing itself.
Disinfection
does not necessarily kill all microorganisms, especially resistant bacterial spores; it is less effective than sterilization, which is an extreme physical and/or chemical process that kills all types of life.
Standard precautions
set of infection control practices used to prevent transmission of diseases that can be acquired by contact with blood, body fluids, non-intact skin (including rashes), and mucous membranes
Sanitization
The process of making something sanitary, as by cleaning or disinfecting
Sterilization
process that eliminates (removes) or kills (deactivates) all forms of life and other biological agents
Decontamination
process of cleansing an object or substance to remove contaminants such as micro-organisms or hazardous materials, including chemicals, radioactive substances, and infectious diseases.
