48-72hr for wound seal
Sealed if dry
Dont expose wound before the unlpess have to
Mostly due to pt own bacteria
Conseqs- morb and mort, incr hosp stay, cost, septacaemia, organ fail
Pre op preven- shower bef, hair remov, AB prophylaxis
Intra op preven- skin povidone iodine or chlorhexidine, sterile, cover wound.
Post op preven- leave wound for 72hr, PPE, hand hyg, act on signs, AB cover
Types- superfic SC, deep fascia/musc, organ space
Mx- obs, ix, AB, open and debride.

Op wound classif
Clean
Clean contaminated
Contaminated
Dirty
Chest infec
Pain and immobil prev breathing and cough
High risk if resp dis hx
Opiates suppress cough
Mx- physio incl active coughing and AB
ITU and intubat due to infec means cant clear sputum, req suction, maybe trachy
UTI
Catheter risk, remove asap and dont use unless req
bacteraemia
Often also have SSI
Other causes- cannula, CVP, catheter, UTI, anast breakd or abdo sepsis
C diff RFs
AB 65 or older LT hosp admiss nursing or care home underlying illness imm comprom
