Congenital Rubella Syndrome
- Sensorineural Deafness, Cataracts, PDA, Glaucoma
ALSO can be associated with:
- growth retardation, hepatosplenomegaly, purpura, salt and pepper chorioretinitis, micropthalmia, cerebral palsy
Painful blisters affecting vagina and cervix
a. Genital Herpes
b. Ectropium
c. Molluscum Contagiosum
d. Syphyllis
e. Vulval Malignancy
Genital Herpes
- In pregnancy, oral aciclovir should be continued til delivery and delivery should be via caesarean section
Management for VZV exposure in a previously unexposed pregnant woman
VZIG - If contact was deemed significant
VZV leads to fetal varicella syndrome in babies (skin scarring, eye defects, limb hypoplasia, microcephalic)
VZV immunity testing in pregnant mother comes back as negative (she is not immune)
What treatment do you give?
Advise to stay clear of chicken pox and if significant contact is made to come to ED for VZIG
should have VZV immunisation post partum
Neonatal hydrocephalus:
Rubella,
CMV
or
Toxoplasmosis
Toxoplasmosis
- Cerebral calcification, Hydrocephalus, Chorioretinitis
ALSO:
-anaemia, hepatosplenomegaly, cerebral palsy
Neonatal purpuric skin lesions:
Rubella,
CMV,
or Toxplasmosis
CMV (Rubella can cause too but less frequently)
ALSO:
sensorineural deafness, encephalitis, pneumonitis, hepatosplenomegaly, anaemia, jaundice, cerebral palsy
What is the most likely cause of cyanotic congenital heart disease at birth?
at 1-2 months?
birth: Transposition of great arteries
1-2 months: Tetralogy of fallot (overiding aorta, VSD, pulmonary stenosis. right ventricular hypertrophy)
