Inequalities/Absolutes Flashcards
What do inequalities signal?
They signal for an equation to have more than one solution.
If you have a variable, what do you need to be careful of?
You need not divide by x or multiply by x because you don’t know whether it is negative or positive.
Treat Absolute values like what?
Like parentheses
Absolute values signal what?
They also signal the possibility of two values or two solutions.
An inequality equations golden rule is…
If you multiply/divide one side of the equation, YOU MUST do the same to the other— this includes fractions too.
Flip the sign
DO NOT multiply or divide an inequality by a variable unless you know the sign of the number that the variable stands for.
Combining inequalities
Algebra: Page 131, Manhattan Prep
Assume that you’ve already tried the two DS statements individually and neither was sufficient by itself. In order to test the statements together, add the inequalities together to see whether they match the question.
