Q

Percents: A dress is marked up 16 2/3 % to a final price of $140. What is the original price?

A

16 2/3 % is equivalent to 1/6. Adding 1/6 of a number to itself is the same thing as multiplying by 1 + 1/6 (or in any case x/x).

Call original price x:

(7/6)x = 140

X=120

Complex fractions

A

Don’t split the denominator.

Example: 15+10/5+2

Remember this rule when simplifying fractions: I may split up the terms in the numerator, but I may NEVER split the terms in the denominator.
